Behind the Candelabra

You can now take home Marc Forster’s zombie blockbuster, World War Z. In his review, Alex Rose called it “solidly utilitarian but ultimately rote.” You can decide for yourself if it’s more disaster or zombie movie.

If you didn’t get a chance to check out Sofia Coppola’s latest, The Bling Ring, now’s your chance. It about a group of fame-obsessed teens robbing celebrities’ houses.

Steven Soderbergh’s (Traffic, Ocean’s Eleven) Behind the Candelabra takes on Liberace. The film is based on the autobiographical novel following his six-year relationship with the much-younger Scott Thorson. Michael Douglas plays Liberace and Matt Damon his lover — although it may not sound like your cup of tea, the reviews for this one are pretty stellar.

The East is yet another collaboration between Brit Marling and director Zal Batmanglij. The pair first worked together on 2011’s Sound of My Voice, about a cult. With The East, they explore an anarchist group infiltrating major corporations. In her review, Anna Phelan suggest that with each new collaboration they get “a little closer to greatness.”

Getting the Criterion treatment this week is Ingmar Bergman’s Autumn Sonata, about the complexities of a mother/daughter relationship.

And Richard Linklater’s Slacker is being re-released on Criterion Blu-ray. The film follows social outcasts in Austin, Texas.

Fans of Psycho should make sure to check out season one of Bates Motel. It’s a modern attempt at a prequel, starring Freddie Highmore (Finding Neverland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) as a teenage Norman Bates and Vera Farmiga as his mother Norma. Season two doesn’t start until next year, giving you plenty of time to catch up.

Also in TV, you can check out season one of Arrow. Oliver Queen (Steven Amell) is spoiled and rich. When he goes missing, everyone assumes that he’s dead. When he returns to town five years later, he decides to train to kick some ass — taking down criminals in the city, armed with a bow. Season two starts early October.

Season two of Grimm also hits shelves. A homicide detective finds out that he’s related to hunters that fight supernatural forces. It also links nicely to the fairytales. The new season starts at the end of October.

And season two of Falling Skies is also available. A group of humans survive an alien attack on Earth and band together to fight back. The third season already aired this summer and it’s been signed on for a fourth that’ll start next year.

It’s also handy to keep your eyes peeled this time of year for horror flick favourites, like Bride of Frankenstein, Day of the Dead, Dracula, The Devil Bat and The Wolf Man.
