This Is the End

Arguably the best comedy of the summer, This Is the End comes to Blu-ray. In his review Alex Rose called it “inspired lunacy.” Your favourite comedic celebrities (Jonah Hill, Jay Baruchel, Seth Rogen, Michael Cera etc.), are enjoyin’ a party at James Franco’s house when the apocalypse strikes.

Room 237 is a must-see for horror and Kubrick fans. The documentary explores the many interpretations of The Shining and the hidden gems throughout the film.

You can now own the first three seasons of Downton Abbey, Julian Fellowes’ (Gosford Park) award-winning British series centered around the Crawley family, leading up to World War I. Season four started a couple weeks ago in the U.K. — North America will start to air these episodes in early 2014.

Two classics coming to Blu-ray are Disney’s The Little Mermaid — you can now follow the adventures of Ariel, Scuttle, Flounder and Sebastian in high definition.

And The Wizard of Oz 3D, which of course follows the story of Dorothy lost in the land of Oz.

Possibly one of the most epic box sets of the year is Bond 50. All of the James Bond flicks, on Blu-ray, in one well-designed set. It includes loads of additional footage and extras to celebrate 50 years of Bond, James Bond.

If you happen to love Jimmy Stewart as much as I do, you’ll be happy to know that you can now own Hitchcock’s Rope and The Man Who Knew Too Much on Blu-ray. Both films are thriller / mysteries, showcasing Stewart and Hitchcock’s cinematic prowess.

And of course as Halloween approaches, more and more horror films are being re-released. This week’s offerings include: an Amityville Horror box set, The Ring, Nightmare on Elm Street, Cloverfield and more. ■
