Savages, Adore Life (Matador)

Adore LifeIt’s a relief that one of the most exciting rock bands of this decade hasn’t lost their edge. If the Channel-hopping four-piece can be criticized for anything, it’s making a Album reviews sophomore record with roughly the same sonic palette, energy and aggression of their 2013 debut Silence Yourself. Produced once again by Johnny Hostile (but mixed by Danish electronic producer Anders Trentemøller), the band roars, wails, pounds and plods with precision, electricity and stark lyrics that cut deep. Guitarist Gemma Thompson is a Mick Ronson for the 21st century, and singer Jehnny Beth has a power rarely heard among vocalists of any gender these days. More of the same? I’ll take it.
