Best of MTL 2018: Film & Arts

“A big massive heartfelt Stikki hug and thank you to the amazing people of the city I love, while doing what I love! It’s always touching and humbling to know you continue to enjoy my work. You motivate me every day. Montreal je vous adore!”—Stikki Peaches, #2 Best Graffiti Crew/Artist (work pictured is “Freedom Frida”)

The Best Film category was a little clearer to poll participants this year as we inserted the word “Local” along with the years 2017/2018, but that didn’t stop many of you from voting for Hollywood films and (in fairly large numbers) a film that came out in 2016 — but we kept Arrival in there anyway for the purely subjective reason that we like it (and, truth be told, there were few films that qualified). As for Denis Villeneuve’s more recent film, Blade Runner 2049 doesn’t meet Can-con criteria, let alone qualify as local, but with Villeneuve and some of his crew being Québécois, we’re happy to claim it as our own — and again, not many films qualified here.

Alongside many old favourites across the cultural scene are a number of artists that are new to this section, namely actor Adam Capriolo, filmmakers AJ Brossoit and James Watts, poet Asa Boxer, cartoonist Alex Lévesque (who technically lives in Baie Comeau, but whatever) and video game company Bethesda.
